Lynn J. Brustein-Kampel
Biography
Wise, observant and compassionate, Lynn Brustein-Kampel took a road somewhat less traveled to join the leaders of New York matrimonial law. Traveling from Rockland County to Manhattan, she went to law school when her youngest child was in kindergarten, at a time when, she says, new opportunities for women were opening up. After law school she launched her own practice, and at that time she saw matrimonial law evolving quickly, as the equitable-distribution laws were enacted. "When I started there was a handful of women attorneys in Rockland County," she says. "That was one reason I entered the law." She later served as an Assistant Town attorney for the nearby Town of Ramapo, N.Y., and in 1984, started the first women's law firm in Rockland County with Lorna Rissier Bernard, Esq., who has since retired. Steven Abel, Esq. joined the firm in 1990.
Their practice, focusing on matrimonial law and to some extent, mediation and dispute resolution, today is a professional fixture of Rockland County.
Her instincts for people have served her well. Abel and Brustein-Kampel P.C., capably handle scores of matrimonial cases each year. Their practice is devoted to the field. She sits on the board of the Center for Family and Divorce Mediation in Rockland County.
She and her husband live in Spring Valley, N.Y.

Steven L. Abel
Biography
Over the last three decades Steven Abel has built a reputation as an honest, straight-shooting problem-solver of the Rockland County matrimonial bar. Experienced, knowledgeable and easy going, Abel thought he'd become a journalist after college, but finding "The New York Times wouldn't hire me right away," he went to law school. After passing the bar, in the mid-70s, Abel was an associate in a small Spring Valley firm, and it was there that he fell into matrimonial law. Early on he took the divorce case of an Episcopal minister, and other cases followed. He gained valuable courtroom experience working as an assistant county attorney. He went on to serve in many positions in the community, including serving as one of the first Hearing Examiners for Rockland County, a Family Court support arbitrator.
