Trading the House for Pension
My wife of 29 years has decided to leave the marriage. We are working on a separation agreement. One proposal is for me to sign over $200,000 in equity in the house in return for her giving up claim to the marital share of my retirement. Are there any resources that would help me decide if this would work to my benefit? - Jim
Answer:
Jim: It is not uncommon to trade a pension for the house in a divorce. But they are treated differently under tax law and they are not necessarily equal dollar for dollar. A divorce lawyer, accountant or divorce financial planner can help you determine what to do.
