What Date Do We Use to Value the House?

Question of the Day:

My husband wants to buy me out of our marital home. What is the process for arriving at its value - do we pay to have it appraised now and then have to do it again when the divorce is final? – Patti

Answer:

Patti: I am all for keeping things simple. I would pick one date, whether it is now, the divorce or in between, and use the appraised value on that date to determine the amount of the buyout.
