A divorce may seem to be about the past. The emotional turmoil and pain for you and your family may find you repeating that familiar phrase - - “I just wanted to get it over with and move on.” But divorce financial planning is very much about your long-term future and security, and many of the financial decisions you make and their results are permanent.

A divorce can be one of the most financially devastating events that ever faces a family, and unfortunately, the sting of this bite into family wealth very often affects one party unfairly and for many years into the future. It does not have to be this way – but knowledge of the facts with proper planning and analysis by financial experts is key to obtaining the best possible outcome. We are not lawyers nor do we take the place of lawyers. But many divorcing parties incorrectly assume that their attorney is also the financial expert. You certainly do not want to wait until the divorce process is well under way to begin consideration of the financial strategies and repercussions, and in fact, there are some actions which are best undertaken prior to the filing of any action.

Strategic Wealth Partners works with divorcing clients and their attorneys to navigate through the many aspects of the divorce which will impact your financial future including:

⇒ Tips on how to seek out the most suitable divorce attorney
⇒ Locating, collecting, and organizing the financial data you will need
⇒ Uncovering assets which your spouse may not want you to know about
⇒ Financial issues to consider regarding retirement plans
⇒ How to avoid the most nasty and unexpected tax consequences of poorly structured alimony and child support settlements
⇒ Evaluation of earning power, career assets, and retraining needs
⇒ Evaluating different settlement options for their short-term and long-term ramifications on both parties
⇒ Evaluating the tax implications of your decisions
⇒ Looking at the costs and benefits of keeping the home and other assets versus selling them or offering them to your spouse

The financial analysis of various settlement proposals is complex and requires specialized expertise and training as well as sophisticated software which can analyze and predict how specific proposals will impact each party over the long term. This detailed analysis of both short and long-term effects is designed to produce the most desirable outcomes for the parties while reducing the chances of unanticipated and unwelcome surprises down the road.
