Christopher P. Kohler

Mr. Kohler handles all aspects of family law, including:

  • Original Divorce Actions
  • Custody Disputes
  • Child Support and Post-Judgment Support Modifications
  • Spousal Support
  • Paternity
  • Prenuptial Agreements.

My background and experience reflect a commitment to building trial skills while pursuing a course in family related issues.  I obtained my law degree at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL.  While attending law school I worked hard to learn what it takes to be successful at trying cases.  I competed nationally in Mock Trial competitions and I also interned with two State's attorneys (Prosecuting Attorney's Offices) in Cook and Kane counties.  The time I spent with prosecutors was invaluable as I was able to try domestic violence cases before graduation.

In 1998 my wife matched as a resident with Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and we have been here ever since.  I joined Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services and resumed representing client's dealing with domestic violence and family law issues on a pro bono basis.

Currently, I specialize in all family law issues.  I believe that my litigation philosophy differs significantly from most other attorneys I encounter practicing family law.  In a nutshell, if you want to avoid the time, expense, and uncertainty of going to trial, PREPARE YOUR CASE AS IF IT IS.  You cannot negotiate from a position of weakness.  In addition, more than any other attorney I have ever opposed, I employ technology to control your legal fees.  This web site is a good example.  I believe that, given the cost of litigating a case, your limited financial resources should be used more for covering court appearances and moving your case, and less for chasing paper, and performing redundant work.

Family Law

There are two kinds of divorces in the state of Michigan.  Divorces that involve children and divorces that do not involve children.  These are labeled for the purposes of docket management in the Courts.  Divorces without children are labeled DO.  Divorces involving children are labeled DM.  In either case, the court has the jurisdiction to rule on the following issues:

  • Property division;
  • Spousal support; (in appropriate cases)
  • Marital torts; (in appropriate cases)

In cases involving children, the court has the jurisdiction to decide not only the issues listed above but the following issues as well:

  • Custody;
  • Visitation;
  • Child Support;

The secret to surviving a divorce is by developing a plan and implementing it.  You want to prevail on the issues that mean the most to you, but you also want your case to settle.  Trials are expensive and risky.  However, if you aim at nothing, you will hit nothing.  At the beginning of your case, we will identify attainable objectives by applying the law to the facts of your particular case.  I will give you a road map and an anatomy of your case from start to finish.  This will take into consideration not only the localisms of your county circuit court, but also the habits and preferences of the judge assigned to your case.

There are issues that will need your attention right away.  If divorce is truly on the horizon for you, you will need to decide what your life is going to look like while the divorce is pending.  If you would like to find out how, please sign the guest book, request either a phone or internet consultation, or schedule an office appointment to come and see me.
