Family Law Practice

Issues that arise in the practice of family law can be complex and often entail deeply personal matters of a sensitive nature. Butzel Long family law attorneys are recognized as leading practitioners in this field who combine a strong talent for advocacy with sensitivity for the emotional issues typically involved.

Many of the most personal concerns in family law deal fundamentally with the equitable distribution of resources, such as personal property and support payments. In addition, there is the need for fair and sensitive handling of such issues as child custody and visitation rights.

Our attorneys provide legal counsel and advice to clients concerning divorce, annulment, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, property division, alimony, child support, custody, visitation, paternity, guardianship, and adoption issues.

Butzel Long attorneys also have strong capabilities with more technical and specialized areas such as the proper valuation of a spouse’s corporate benefits and deferred compensation. These values may comprise a substantial portion of a divorce settlement or affect the content of a pre- or post-nuptial agreement.

The full capabilities of the firm are also available to provide support to clients on related personal matters such as financial planning and taxes. For example, estate and tax planning issues often need to be addressed as the result of major changes in personal circumstances.
