Family law professionals are hoping mere words can improve a child's life. Duel Florida Senate and House bills passed unanimously last month, changing terminology and giving greater responsibility to parents who are going through a divorce.
For instance, parents are supposed to create a parenting plan with time sharing. Terms such as custody, visitation and primary and secondary parent will disappear from court proceedings and paperwork. "Words are very powerful and words have great meaning," said Sen. Evelyn Lynn, R-Ormand Beach, who sponsored the Senate bill. "We're trying to make it so that the whole process becomes a little more friendly."
