About the Stein Mediation & Family Center

The Stein Mediation & Family Center is a full-service mediation and family center which provides mediation, therapy (family, couples, and individuals), divorce coaching, child specialist services, parent coordination, parenting, and education consultation (including tutoring). As the Director of the Center, I provide all services.

About the Director: Judith Stein, Ph.D., M.S.W.

I have a Ph.D. in Public Health (Behavioral Sciences and Health Education) from U.C.L.A. and an M.S.W. in Social Work (clinical emphasis) from N.Y.U. My dissertation was in the area of child sexual assault, and I have published extensively in the field of psychological sequelae of adult and child sexual assault.

I have substantial, intensive training in mediation from New York University, the Ackerman Institute, and Community Mediation Services, Inc. Clinically, I have completed intensive training in Family Therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. I am currently an Adjunct Professor in Social Work (New York University) and Psychology (Pace University) and have been teaching at the university level for over fifteen years. My specializations include child development and eating disorders.

Mediation Services

As a mediator, I specialize in family matters such as divorce, separation, custody and visitation, divorce settlement disputes, parent-child disputes, elder care, and other related areas. Mediation is about helping all parties understand the relevant issues and advocate for themselves a solution that will best meet their needs and the needs of their children. I am committed to doing this in a respectful, sensitive, and impartial way.

I am knowledgeable about how the courts would likely resolve an issue and can provide that grounding if desired, though I am most interested in helping you understand and articulate what you really need to make things work moving forward. I will ensure that all voices are heard and considered at all times. As a clinician, I am also sensitive to the emotional hot spots that tend to break things down during mediation and will help you find a way around them so that you can reach a solution that will work – now and in the long run.

Please remember, you DO have a choice! You can:

  • Send your kids to college OR put your lawyer’s kids through college;
  • Heighten animosity through lawyers OR keep things cool with mediation;
  • Let the courts decide for you OR craft your solution yourselves;
  • Invest years in court OR spend weeks in mediation;
  • Reduce family stress OR ratchet it up.

Clinical Services

Clinically, I use a variety of cognitive-behavioral (CBT), psychoanalytic, and systems approaches to my work. Specializations include divorce coaching and therapy, parenting, family reconciliation, eating disorders, relationship issues, and individuals in transition. I am a warm and compassionate listener and welcome the opportunity to work with you as an individual, a couple, or a family. I have expertise in parenting and have an especially good rapport with adolescents.

Fees

We are committed to providing mediation and family services at affordable rates. Our usual rates are $250 – $300 per hour for mediation and $100 – $200 per hour for therapy and other services, but we have lower fee slots available on a sliding scale basis.
