What is Mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary settlement process.

A mediator is an impartial person who helps people in conflict make practical, informed decisions to resolve the issues before them.

The mediator helps people examine their situation in terms of their needs and interests. Relevant information is gathered which may include budgets, business records, tax returns, property valuations, etc. Settlement options are developed and discussed to be sure they meet everyone's goals fairly.

Decisions are made by the clients. You can control the decisions that affect your family, your finances, your business and your life through mediation.

About Kathleen Nichols

Kathleen M. Nichols founded Kathleen Nichols Mediation Services in 1994 after a 15-year career in law firm administration. After working for ten years in Denver law firms (Holme, Roberts & Owen; White & Steele), Kathleen spent five years as the administrator of Stoel Rives 60-attorney Seattle office. During her law firm career, Kathleen spent many hours helping to resolve conflicts between and among attorneys, staff and supervisors. She also witnessed the devastating results of the legal process on lives and finances.

Believing that mediation is a much better way to resolve most issues than the traditional adversarial process, Kathleen started her new career in mediation. Since 1994, she has mediated well over 400 cases, including numerous divorce/legal separations/parenting plans, civil court cases, workplace disputes, and conflicts in families with aging parents.

In addition to her private practice, Kathleen works with the City of Seattle's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program for disputes among city employees. She also volunteers with the King County Dispute Resolution Center, the King County Inter-local Conflict Resolution Group, the Federal Executive Board's Alternative Dispute Resolution Consortium, and the City of Bellevue Neighborhood Mediation Program, mediating disputes and mentoring other volunteer mediators.

Kathleen received her B.A. degree in Sociology in 1982, and her Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1989, both from the University of Colorado. She has taken numerous trainings in the field, including basic mediation training and advanced training in divorce, business, neighborhood, parent/teen, workplace/group, and elder mediation. Kathleen is certified by the Washington Mediation Association as a mediator in the areas of family/domestic relations, business and community, and workplace/employment. She is a member of the Washington Mediation Association and the national Association for Conflict Resolution.
