Bob Gaston is a retired Family Law Judge providing Divorce Mediation Services.
He has successfully resolved 95% of his mediation cases.

About Bob E. Gaston: Educator, Lawyer, Legislator, and Judge

After working in the field of education for seventeen years, Bob was accepted into law school at California Western School of Law in San Diego. Bob received several awards while in law school, including the Western Regional Championship for Trial Advocacy. He traveled to Houston, Texas, and participated in the National Trial Advocacy competition while representing his law school.

After graduating from law school, Bob returned to Las Vegas and began working as a Law Clerk for John O’Reilly, Esq. After passing the state bar exam, he continued to work for the same law firm of Keefer, Clark and O’Reilly. After one year, Bob opened his own offices and had a general practice of law. He was on the “criminal track” appearing in Justice and District Court representing those criminal defendants with which the Public Defender had conflicts. His other clients included domestic cases and civil cases.

Legislature

After a couple of years in private practice, Bob then ran for a seat in the Nevada Assembly. He was elected in Assembly District 16 and served in that capacity for four years. When he wasn’t in the Legislature, he continued his practice of law.

During his first session in the Nevada Legislature, Bob authored a bill related to protecting victims of domestic violence. The press picked this as the most outstanding piece of legislation during the first half of the session, and labeled it as “Donna’s Bill.”

Donna was a victim of domestic violence who Bob represented in his private practice. She had been severely beaten after a temporary protective order had been filed. When the hearing master failed to find the perpetrator of violence in contempt of court, failed to provide her medical assistance, failed to provide her with attorney fees for having to enforce the order, and failed to provide her with damages caused to Donna and her property, Bob authored a bill making it mandatory to sanction the perpetrator and reimburse the costs and expenses of the victim.

Bob was honored by being the first Southern Nevada male recipient of the “White Hat” award given annually in Washoe County, primarily for the Donna Bill legislation.

Bob authored a number of other bills that made their way into law during the 1987 and 1989 legislative sessions.

While in the Legislature, Bob served on the Judiciary Committee, the Taxation Committee, Vice-Chair of the Education Committee, and the Tourism and Small Business Committee.

Family Court

Voters approved and the Nevada Legislature funded the implementation of a Family Court in Nevada. Since Bob had spent about seventeen years in the area of education as a teacher and principal, dealing with children and families, Family Court was a good fit. A great deal of Bob’s general practice of law had evolved into handling issues that were primarily family matters.

Bob was one of the first six judges elected in Southern Nevada to Family Court.  Presently, only four of the first six judges remain on the bench.

One of Judge Gaston’s favorite responsibilities is make rulings on adoptions. Judge Gaston has made an effort to streamline the system and make it more efficient so that adoptive parents and children aren’t required to wait for years while an adoption is being processed.

Community Involvement

Judge Gaston has always had a deep sense of commitment to his community. As a result of that commitment, he has been enthusiastically involved for years in programs that benefit the community. He is active in his church and scouting, and has served in leadership capacities in the Parent/Teachers’ Organization, Safe House, the Nevada Association for the Handicapped, and the Green Valley Rotary Club. He also serves on the Committee for the State of Nevada on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices, and on the Attorney General’s Domestic Violence Prevention Council.
