Roy Martin is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University (Bachelor’s Degree, 1985: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math), and of the University of Arizona, (Juris Doctorate, 1996 Magna Cum Laude). Having excelled in law school, graduating 13th in a class of 164, and having served on law review, he chose to practice domestic relations law based on his own personal experience. In his first year of law school, he went through a very difficult divorce. He went back to court to re-litigate custody in his second year of law school. He completed law school while serving as the sole custodian of his two children. He now practices law while raising his children on his own.

"This experience has given me tremendous empathy for those who are dealing with divorce, custody and visitation issues. Having personally been there, I understand what it’s like – the disorientation, the anger, bitterness, sense of loss. I know what people go through. I have chosen an area of law which is perhaps less lucrative than others, but which is extremely meaningful to me. When people come to me arguing over petty issues, I can often help them to step back and see their interests in terms of the larger picture because they know that I understand."

Practice devoted to divorce and other domestic relations issues, such as:

  • legal separation
  • custody
  • visitation
  • child support
  • spousal maintenance
  • paternity
  • premarital agreements
  • adoptions
  • guardianships, and
  • rights of grandparents

Mr. Martin is committed to alternative dispute resolution techniques, such as mediation and collaborative divorce, whenever use of those approaches is beneficial to clients.

When family law issues arise, spouses or other parties to the dispute often wish to remain amicable, particularly when children are involved. Unfortunately, good will tends to break down when dealing with highly charged emotional issues. To prevent this from happening, a variety of approaches can be employed.

Alternative dispute resolution may offer the best opportunity to minimize conflict and expense while achieving solutions tailored to the needs of your family. Mediation and Collaborative Divorce are two ADR methods that can lead to the highest quality settlements while avoiding the conflict and stress of litigation. For this reason, Mr. Martin is both an attorney and a mediator, as well as a founding member of the Collaborative Law Group of Southern Arizona.

When alternative dispute resolution is not appropriate, it remains essential that custody, visitation, child support, division of property and debts, spousal maintenance and other issues are addressed in a manner that results in quality court orders that solve clients' problems. Therefore, the traditional approach is sometimes best.

An attorney's job is to resolve legal issues quickly and efficiently. The goals of representation are to achieve high quality results that will not need to be revisited, while at the same time preserving as much of your financial and emotional resources as possible. Mr. Martin believes that the more of these resources are preserved, the more easily you can begin your life anew.
