The Hartog case settled New York law concerning awards of equitable distribution especially concerning the appreciation of the separate property owned by one spouse during the marriage and the standards for the award of lifetime support to a wife and securing that award in the event of the death of the payor spouse.
• Matisoff v. Dobi, 90 N.Y.2d 127, 659 N.Y.S.2d 209, 681 N.E.2d 376 (1997), which is another New York Court of Appeals case, which held that a signed, but unacknowledged, marital agreement was not enforceable in a divorce action.

Mr. Heisler is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the Board of Managers of the New York State Chapter.
