Even a simple divorce can involve up to ten hours of “lawyer” time; that’s $2,000 for legal fees for just one spouse or $4,000 for both. However, most divorces with adversarial lawyers tend not to be that “simple;” child custody issues, division of real estate assets, retirements, etc., drive up the costs significantly when both spouses are paying hourly fees in the hundreds of dollars to their respective attorneys. I’ve seen middle income families without major controversies incur divorce bills of over $40,000. Instead of dividing a couples' assets to give each one and the children a chance to start over after a divorce, the assets have to be liquidated to pay off the attorneys’ fees and the individuals have no recourse but to file bankruptcy. It is these situations that prompted me to devise a simple, sensible approach to helping people get divorced at an extremely fair and reasonable cost.
