You will need certain documents to prepare for a child custody hearing. Note that in these hearings, the court decides custody based on what it considers is in the best interest of the child. Therefore, you must prepare to show that it is in your child's best interests to live with you.
Preparing Child Custody Documents
Documents that may help you in a child custody case are school records (proof of good grades), medical records (proof of good health), as well as documentation such as a journal of daily events. The journal will help you provide crucial information for questions asked. The information may include activities you do with your child and other valuable information. Positive activities may include the amount of time spent with your child, extracurricular activities, attendance at school conferences; visits with extended family, etc.
You should also document problems that are created by the other parent. These may include the parent bringing the child back late from visits or not showing up for visitation.
Other Evidence
You may also have witnesses testify in your behalf. If necessary, an expert mental health professional may be called as an to help the court determine which parent should receive custody.
Other evidence such as photos of the family home will establish the size and condition of the child's current residence. Make sure the photos positively reflect a good home. Everything must be documented to show that living with you will be in the best interest of your child.
