Divorce is life-changing, which means it can be very difficult for many people. Your attorney's job is to minimize the tough parts and provide you with the tools to live your life during the divorce and after. These 10 tips should point you in the right direction.
- Know that you will continue to live and to enjoy life, if not now, then soon.
- Keep your attorney informed of new developments, such as job changes, new addresses and phone numbers, unforeseen bills, etc.
- Provide the documents we request as promptly as possible.
- Never put the children in the middle of the divorce and don't read them the court papers.
- Keep all letters, drafts, pleadings, and other information your attorney sends you in a binder or folder so it's all in one place for easy access.
- Obey all court orders.
- Join a divorce support group or find an individual therapist if the stress becomes overwhelming.
- Don't drag other family members and friends into the "fight" because these people will continue to be your children's grandparents, aunts & uncles, and neighbors after the Final Decree is entered.
- Don't blame your soon-to-be-ex for everything; it took two of you to marry, so own up to your part and take responsibility for finding solutions where possible.
- BREATHE! Don't obsess over the divorce process or the inevitable end because you have a life outside the lawyers' offices and courtroom.
