Everyone says it cannot happen to them, but it does. What am I talking about you may ask? Not being able to work and support yourself anymore due to some kind of disabling condition. But, rest assured, there is good news – you may be eligible to draw Social Security Disability benefits.
According to the Social Security guidelines, “disability” means an “inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.”
If you feel that you can no longer work due to a disabling condition or a combination of conditions, you should file for disability right away. Don’t wait! Waiting may make you lose benefits to which you are entitled. After all, you have paid Social Security taxes the whole time you have worked.
Even if you have not worked in quite some time and have recently fallen ill, you may be entitled to Supplemental Security Income, which is based on financial need as well as your health.
