Massachusetts Mediator Certification FAQ's

1. How do I know if a mediator is qualified?
Ask whether he or she is certified, or is in the process of becoming certified.

2. What will they tell me?
In Massachusetts, as of January 1, 1996, the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation has implemented a certification procedure.

3. What does a mediator have to do to become certified?
Meet an educational requirement, (i.e. a master’s degree, the equivalent, or an approved waiver), have 30 hours of basic mediation training, have 60 hours of substantive training, (i.e. financial, legal, psychological), and have 100 hours of family mediation experience.

4. Once a mediator is certified, are there any further requirements?
Yes. 10 hours of continuing education per calendar year will also be required.

5. What is the goal of the certification process?
To ensure a base level of expertise and experience for divorce mediators.
