“I can’t believe I’m single again.”
“I’m never going to meet anyone else.”
“I feel empty inside.”
Sound familiar? After a breakup, a series of recurring negative thoughts can play like a bad jingle in your mind. This tune of negativity may persist despite your mental protests. In fact, you could be screaming STOP internally, but somehow the thoughts continue to creep up at inopportune moments.
First, please understand that you are neither going crazy, nor are you alone. It’s extremely common to get caught in a spiral of negativity after you endure something traumatic in your life. You may even feel like this break up has stripped the meaning from the other fulfilling aspects of your life such as work, friends, and even family. If this resonates with you in any sense, I am here to tell you there is hope to feel optimistic, hopeful, and to think positively once again. In fact, there is one powerful technique you can use to overcome your negativity completely!
The technique: Flip your negative thoughts on their head – in writing. The next time you have a negative thought, write it down on a piece of paper. Then take a moment to acknowledge that your thought is based in fear and not reality. Breathe deeply and without fear think of the more likely outcome. On the same sheet of paper, write down the more realistic, positive thought. Make sure you begin your sentence with either “The more likely outcome…” or “A more accurate way of seeing this is…”
Example:
Negative Thought: “I’m never going to meet anyone else.”
Positive Thought: “The more likely outcome is that there are millions of amazing people out there looking to connect with another amazing person.”
The key to this technique is to execute it in writing, and to do it at the moment you have the thought. Wherever you happen to be, grab a piece of paper, a sticky note, your phone, or anything else that is accessible to write out your negative thought and flip it to the positive outcome.
This writing technique will, in essence, rewire your mind to go to the positive. Eventually, your negative thoughts will completely fall out and you will move into a place of continual positive thinking. If you continue the process, what will happen next is terribly exciting! Your hope and optimism will develop a momentum that snowballs into even greater positivity and you will begin to manifest a future that is better and brighter than you had ever imagined.
