Modifying Child Support Orders

There are many reasons why you might want to change the amount of child support that you’re currently paying or receiving. Maybe you’ve lost your job or had your hours cut, or you’ve learned that your ex is earning a lot more money than before. You might also need a support modification because you have a new baby, or your child unexpectedly has serious medical needs.

Laws on when you can modify child support vary from state to state. But there are rules that apply most everywhere. Generally, you’ll need to show the circumstances have changed significantly since a judge issued the existing order, and that those circumstances weren’t anticipated at the time and aren’t temporary.

Learn more about the valid reasons for modifying child support, how to get a change in support payments, and how to fight a modification request.
